"The Secret" was a treasure hunt book published in 1982 by Byron Preiss. The puzzle consisted of 12 paintings and 12 poems. When paired properly, their clues led to 12 buried treasure boxes containing keys that could be exchanged for precious gems. To date, just 3 have been found.
Many discoveries have been made over the past 40 years. Below are the paintings and poems in their most likely pairings.
Please note, there is some debate over the Milwaukee and Montreal pairings. I choose to pair Painting 9 with Poem 8 due to a hint in the Japanese edition of the book that indicates "as you walk the beating of the world" is a person's name starting with DRUM. The "legeater" lamppost (seen in Painting 9) located at the Mount Stephen Club in Montreal is located on Drummond Street. DRUM + MONDE is a very elegant solution to "as you walk the beating of the world." Not only is Drummond a person's name starting with drum, but Monde means world in French, which is the official language of Québec.
